Unfair Credit Card Handling and Receipt Practices
For nearly 15 years, the federal Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act has been attempting to prevent fraud and identity theft. For their part, businesses are required to shorten your credit card number on receipts to no more than the last five digits of the number as well as removing the expiration date.
The Act provides for statutory damages ranging from $100 up to $1000 per each willful violation, including knowing or reckless violations. Consumers can protect themselves from identity theft and privacy violations by carefully reviewing their receipts. If you believe a business has violated this Act, please request a free consultation above.
